Conventional Arms and Ammunition
Countering the proliferation and misuse of conventional arms and ammunition.
Forty per cent of violent deaths are committed by firearms. The illicit proliferation and misuse of conventional arms contributes to death and destruction around the world every day. UNIDIR’s Conventional Arms and Ammunition Programme works to curb these impacts.
Through our action-oriented field research and multi-stakeholder dialogues we develop new ways to tackle illicit proliferation and misuse, to counteract improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and address the use of explosive weapons in populated areas (EWIPA).
We work to ensure effective implementation and development of international and regional frameworks such as the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW), the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), the Convention on Cluster Munitions, and the UN Programme of Action on Small Arms (PoA).
Designing tools that help to save lives
UNIDIR’s Conventional Arms and Ammunition Programme has developed numerous tools that can be applied to real-world settings and purposes:
- Strengthening Weapons and Ammunition Management
- Countering Threats from IEDs
- Profiling Small Arms and Ammunition in Armed Violence Settings
- Measuring the effects of using explosive weapons in populated areas
- Analysing Arms-Related Risks
- Understanding How the Arms Trade Treaty Affects Risks of Diversion
