Integrated Approaches
Promoting international security strategies that consider gender equality, the Women Peace and Security agenda, and youth engagement.
More than 264 million women live in fragile and conflict-affected countries, yet less than 20% of peace negotiators are women. Growing complexity requires diversity, but women’s voices are often lacking in decision-making on arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament.
Young people are also deeply affected by conflict and international security threats, but they are underrepresented in all areas of policy development and implementation.
UNIDIR analyses the differentiated impacts of armed violence on women, men, boys and girls and examines how social norms shape the role of weapons in society. By translating this awareness into policy action, we help ensure that arms control and disarmament efforts deliver for everyone.
Insights and action for equality
Our two specialized hubs serve as gateways to understanding the relationship between disarmament and issues of gender and youth. The Gender and Disarmament Hub explores the underrepresentation of women in disarmament today, the actions that can redress the balance, and the benefits of applying equality-conscious perspectives. The Youth and Disarmament Hub presents UNIDIR’s youth-led and youth-empowering actions in the field of disarmament, arms control and non-proliferation, offering resources, insights and pathways for engagement.
