Regional Briefings: Preparing for Success in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Review Process

UNIDIR invited representatives from all regional groups to participate in a series of regional briefings designed to discuss the review process of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

The NPT review process is approaching the final stage of its five-year cycle, with the Third Session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference set to commence in New York between 28 April to 9 May 2025. The briefings provided an overview of the current state of the treaty and its review process, explored some of the key challenges facing the treaty, analyzed external pressures and their implications and discussed procedural aspects of the review process.

These briefings aimed to equip States from all UN regional groups with the necessary information for a productive NPT session and plan ahead for a successful outcome.

UNIDIR welcomed representatives from all UN regional groups, including delegates from Permanent Missions and embassies in Geneva, New York and Vienna, as well as officials from national capitals. In total the briefings had more than 90 participants, demonstrating a strong global interest in the NPT Review Process.
