To mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, UNIDIR is hosting a webinar in collaboration with United Nations Action, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Office of Disarmament Affairs (UNODA).
Women and girls make up the majority of victims and survivors of gender-based violence (GBV), which takes many forms and often involves the use or threat of weapons. Yet, such violence remains severely underreported, limiting efforts to prevent it. During conflict, GBV frequently escalates into more severe, widespread, and weaponized forms, manifesting as conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV).
Such considerations have informed multilateral arms control and disarmament frameworks, accompanied by growing calls for consistent and holistic integration of gender perspective in small arms and light weapons control.
This event offers an opportunity to explore new research and tools on gender-responsive approaches to arms control aimed at preventing GBV in both conflict and non-conflict settings. Focusing on experiences from the Western Balkans and Haiti, it seeks to facilitate cross-geographical learning. Experts and practitioners will share and discuss emerging initiatives and good practices for integrating gender-responsive arms control measures into broader efforts to prevent GBV and CRSV.
