The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) remains a cornerstone in the regime to prevent the hostile use of chemistry. The Fifth CWC Review Conference, which will take place in May, presents an important opportunity to take stock of the past and chart a course for the future of this agreement.
In support of preparations for the Fifth CWC Review Conference and beyond, UNIDIR organized a series of closed, regional briefings intended to stimulate thinking and exchange ideas on substantive issues related to the Convention.
These virtual events began with a short briefing on some of the key topics the Review Conference will likely address, including international cooperation, advances in science and technology, and the future of the verification regime. This was followed by an interactive discussion between regional participants that was moderated by UNIDIR.
WHEN & WHERE
The briefings took place between April 20 and April 28, with sessions for each UN regional group.
PARTICIPANTS
The briefings were closed events, designed both for representatives and National Authorities from the Member States of the specific region working on matters pertaining to the Chemical Weapons Convention.
