Gender and Disarmament

Advancing gender equality and gender analysis in arms control and disarmament.

More than 264 million women live in fragile and conflict-affected countries, yet less than 20 per cent of peace negotiators are women. Growing complexity requires diversity, but women’s voices are often lacking in decision-making on arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament.

UNIDIR analyses the gendered impacts of armed violence and examines how gender norms shape the role of weapons in society. By translating gender awareness into policy action, we help ensure that arms control and disarmament deliver for everyone.

Insights and action on gender equality and gender perspectives

The UNIDIR Gender and Disarmament Hub helps you to understand gender imbalances in disarmament today and explores what we can do to redress them. It also gives clear insights into how to apply gender perspectives, identifies areas for action, and serves as a resource hub for related partners, publications, and videos.
