Model UN 2023: The Implications of the Use and Development of Lethal Autonomous Weapons

The use of lethal autonomous weapons (LAWs) in armed conflict has become a topic of increasing concern for the international community. While some argue that the use of such weapons can reduce the risk to human lives in combat, others express serious reservations about the lack of human oversight and accountability in their use.

The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) and the Geneva International Model United Nations (GIMUN) provided a platform for students to discuss and debate this important issue through a Model United Nations conference.

The opening ceremony featured an introduction by GIMUN President Ms. Sophie MARTIN and opening remarks from Ms. Dongyoun Cho, Senior Researcher on UNIDIR’s Security and Technology Programme, and Mr. Laurent Masmejean, Acting Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the Conference on Disarmament.

The conference took place on 20 and 21 April at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.
