Verifying Disarmament in the TPNW

Launch of the new UNIDIR report “Verifying Disarmament in the TPNW” on the margins of the First Meeting of States Parties to the TPNW.

UNIDIR and the Government of New Zealand are pleased to invite you to an in-person side event to the First Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, to launch a new report titled Verifying Disarmament in the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

The report, edited by Pavel Podvig, critically examines assumptions about nuclear disarmament verification and illustrates how a cooperative approach to verification could be applied to the TPNW. The report argues that verification should be understood as a tool that helps states prove commitment to the obligations that they accepted by joining the treaty. In the opening chapter, Sébastien Philippe and Zia Mian outline the paradigm shift that will accompany disarmament in the TPNW. Nick Ritchie examines the role of power politics in shaping approaches to verification. Alex Wellerstein considers the role of secrecy in nuclear disarmament verification. Togzhan Kassenova describes practical implementation of cooperative disarmament in Kazakhstan.
