Advancing the integration between small arms and light weapons control and the Women, Peace and Security Agenda: Opportunities and good practices

UNIDIR, in collaboration with the Government of Canada, UN Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNLIREC) and UN Women, is co-organizing a side event at the Ninth Biennial Meeting of States (BMS9) on the Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons, to spotlight efforts in strengthening the linkages between small arms and light weapons (SALW) control and the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda. The side event will reflect on opportunities for strengthening the integration of SALW control into the WPS Agenda.

Building on the work carried out in Latin America and the Caribbean, including the delivery of capacity-building activities for WPS Focal Points, research and practical tools such as UNIDIR’s Toolkit Addressing Weapons-Related Risks in Women, Peace and Security National Action Plan, the event will provide a platform to share experiences, lessons learned and good practices.

Panellists will reflect on the following questions for discussion:

  • How can stronger linkages be fostered between SALW control and the WPS Agenda at policy, institutional and operational levels?
  • What lessons learned, tools, good practices and opportunities can support the integration of SALW control into the WPS Nation Action Plans and related national and regional initiatives, and vice versa?

Panellists

  • Hana Salama, Researcher, Integrated Approaches, Gender and Disarmament Programme, UNIDIR
  • Ana Sofía Carranza, Gender and Youth Programme Coordinator, UNLIREC
  • Dragan Bozanic, Gender and Research Project Analyst, UNDP, South Eastern and Eastern Europe Clearinghouse for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons
  • Soledad Urruela, Director, UNLIREC
