The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) is pleased to invite you to a breakfast briefing on Drones and Counter-drone Technology: An Escalating Dynamic.
In recent years, a growing number of state and non-state actors have turned to cheap commercially available drone technology for intelligence collection and aerial attacks. In response to the potentially unprecedented threat posed by these technologies falling in the wrong hands, many militaries and stakeholders have sought to develop or acquire “counter-drone” technology—a novel type of weapon system that could play a key role in all modern conflict. But how does counter-drone technology work? Is it effective against the threat? And how will the escalating dynamic between drones and counter-drone weapons evolve in the years ahead as these two fields seek to stay ahead of one another?
This breakfast meeting is part of a series of informal briefings organized by UNIDIR’s Security and Technology programme. It will introduce participants to the fundamentals of drone threats and the key facets of drone countermeasures, and present a forecast of technological advances that could disrupt this game of cat-and-mouse in the years ahead, with potentially transformative consequences for international security.
