UNIDIR Space Security Research Fellowship

The UNIDIR Space Security Research Fellowship is a year‑long programme designed to equip the next generation of space security professionals with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to navigate today’s rapidly evolving outer space environment. As space becomes increasingly central to global security, economic development, and international cooperation, the Fellowship invests in early‑career experts who will help shape the future of responsible space governance.

Each year, up to ten fellows are selected through an open, competitive, and globally accessible process. Fellows participate in a blend of structured learning, hands‑on research, and engagement with diplomatic and multilateral policy discussions. Through UNIDIR’s unique role within the UN system, fellows gain direct exposure to key processes, tools, and decision‑making spaces that influence international space security.

The fellowship at a glance

Over the course of the year, fellows will:

Participate in UNIDIR’s “Space Security 101” course, introducing the technical, legal and political dimensions of space security.
Contribute directly to UNIDIR’s policy‑relevant research, including engagement and contribution to the continuous development of our space security digital tools, such as the Space Security Portal and the Lexicon for Outer Space Security.
Join virtual workshops, lectures and collaborative sessions with experts and peers fostering cooperative engagement with other fellows and UNIDIR personnel.
Attend the in‑person Fellows Workshop and UNIDIR’s annual Outer Space Security Conference, with travel and accommodation covered to ensure equitable participation.
Develop an independent research commentary (optional) under the mentorship of UNIDIR experts.
