As progress in AI innovation proceeds at breakneck speed, the level of appetite exhibited by States to devise governance frameworks surrounding these technologies is at its highest. While calls for governance solutions are increasing, a growing number of national strategies framing the development, deployment and use of these technologies have started to emerge.
National strategies have indeed been recognized as key to enable the responsible development, deployment and use of AI in security and defence. At the highest level, the United Nations Secretary-General recommended Member States, in his Policy Brief on a New Agenda for Peace, to “urgently develop national strategies on responsible design, development and use of artificial intelligence”.
Against this backdrop, UNIDIR has launched a programme of work dedicated to the development of guidelines for the development, adoption, implementation and review of a national strategy on AI in security and defence.
UNIDIR’s Security and Technology Programme is organizing a First Committee side event to assert the importance of national strategies on AI in security and defence to support regional and multilateral efforts for the governance of these technologies.
Specifically, UNIDIR will provide a platform for discussions on national AI strategies; UNIDIR will then formally launch its Draft Guidelines for the Development, Adoption, Implementation and Review of National Strategies on AI in Security and Defence.
