UNIDIR, in cooperation with the Ministry of National Defence, Former Combatants and Veterans of the Homeland of Angola, is organizing a workshop on Angola’s Arms Trade Treaty ratification roadmap.
Angola signed the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) in September 2013 but has not yet ratified it. Angola’s Ministry of National Defence, Former Combatants and Veterans of the Homeland is coordinating the preparations to become an ATT State Party. With support from the Arms Trade Treaty Voluntary Trust Fund and technical assistance from UNIDIR, Angola is undertaking a comprehensive review and gap analysis of its national control system to identify the measures needed to ensure effective implementation of the ATT and thus enable its ratification.
A key milestone in this process is a two-day workshop to assess Angola’s preparedness for ATT ratification and develop the elements of a national ratification roadmap. The workshop will provide a space for Angolan national authorities to identify existing effective measures and practices and determine the gaps in the national control system to be addressed. It will enable the preparation of a draft ATT ratification roadmap outlining the measures needed to address gaps in Angola’s national control system. After further consultations and refinement, the roadmap will be presented to senior government officials for validation, helping ensure the political commitment and resources needed for implementation.
