Evolving Cyberthreat Landscape and its Implications for the Maintenance of International Peace and Security

Over the past several decades, the development of information and communications technologies has ushered in tremendous benefits in many aspects of our interconnected, digitalized way of living. However, at the same time, such advances have also given rise to new “attack vectors” for the conduct of malicious activity. The rapidly evolving nature of diverse threats in cyberspace, agile adaptivity and sophistication of techniques exploited by malicious actors, and their growing implications on international peace and security, make it imperative for the United Nations and its Member States to remain fully seized of the evolving cyber threat landscape with a view to effective and collective responses.

Over the last several years, the Security Council has become increasingly engaged on the topic of cybersecurity. While these meetings have proven highly beneficial for the Security Council and the broader UN membership, the threat landscape does not remain static, but rather continues to evolve and grow more complex; and thus merit ongoing consideration.

UNIDIR Director Robin Geiss, alongside UNODA Director and Deputy to the High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Mr. Adedeji Ebo, and private sector representative(s) (TBC) have been invited to brief the UN Security Council in an “Arria-Formula” Meeting on the evolving cyberthreat landscape.
