William Potter

Senior Fellow Weapons of Mass Destruction

William “Bill” Potter is the Founding Director of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS) and the Sam Nunn and Richard Lugar Professor of International Studies at MIIS.

Bill is the author, co-author or editor of over 20 books, the most recent of which is Death Dust: The Rise, Decline, and Future of Radiological Weapons Programs (Stanford University Press, 2023). He has served on committees of the US National Academy of Sciences and is a past member of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters. He has participated as a delegate at every NPT Review Conference and Preparatory Committee meeting since 1995. He is the recipient of the 2021 Therese Delpech Memorial Award.

In 2024, Bill was appointed as a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the UN Institute for Disarmament Research.
