Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) continue to pose a serious threat to security and development around the world. Their use has had a particularly severe impact on the delivery of humanitarian assistance and the ability of UN and multilateral peacekeeping operations to ensure the protection of civilians. The proliferation and relatively easy accessibility of certain IED components has enabled their widespread use by non-state armed groups, terrorists, and criminals.
Countering the threats posed by IEDs is a challenging task that requires comprehensive approaches across policy domains, as well as effective international and regional cooperation.
UNIDIR is organizing this series of online regional briefings to provide an overview of the global IED threat, multilateral counter-IED efforts, as well as some of the effective approaches for prevention, mitigation, and response. These briefings will help set the stage for informed dialogues on this critical issue within relevant United Nations and other multilateral frameworks.
