Launch of French and Spanish Reference Methodology for National WAM Baseline Assessments: Insights and a Practical Guide for Implementation

This event discussed how to undertake a national weapons and ammunition management (WAM) baseline assessment in order to strengthen governance, oversight, accountability, and management of arms and ammunition. UNIDIR’s new publication entitled A Reference Methodology for National Weapons and Ammunition Management Baseline Assessments was launched in French and Spanish language at this event. This Reference Methodology codifies UNIDIR’s research methodology which has been used to design and support the implementation of national WAM baseline assessments together with 11 States, and partners, since 2015 to date.

PARTICIPANTS

UNIDIR was accompanied by an expert panel to discuss how the Reference Methodology can be utilised in different geographical regions and security contexts and contribute to national, sub/regional, and multilateral efforts to strengthen WAM. The panel was composed of the following experts/organizations:

• Mr. Ivor Fung, Deputy Chief of the Conventional Arms Branch, United Nations Office of Disarmament Affairs (UNODA)
• Dr. Sani Adamu, Programme Officer, Disarmament and Arms Control, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) 
• Mr. Lawrie Clapton, Head of WAM, Halo Trust
• Ms. Savannah de Tessieres, Independent Expert of national WAM baseline assessment Research Team

The Reference methodology was presented by Mr. Hardy Giezendanner, Senior Researcher at UNIDIR and co-author.
