The Security and Technology Programme at the UNIDIR is pleased to invite you to the launch of a new report titled “Human-Machine Interfaces in autonomous weapon systems. Considerations for human control.”
Human control has been a core theme in the discussions of the Group of Governmental Experts on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (GGE on LAWS), including in the recent session in March and in the inter-sessional discussions. The role of human-machine interfaces has been highlighted on numerous occasions in the Group’s deliberations on human control and is deemed critical to the operationalization of control, such as by allowing operators to monitor, override or deactivate a system.
This UNIDIR report discusses the role of interfaces in the context of autonomous weapon systems. It explains how approaches to interface design have evolved in the context of intelligent systems, what this entails for operator training, and what challenges lie ahead in human-machine interaction. In addition to the presentation of the research, this side-event aims to contribute to the Group’s ongoing discussions about human control in the context of the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in weapon systems.
