Ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) and the International Peace Institute organised a closed-door roundtable to present and discuss research findings from the forthcoming report “Addressing Weapons in Conflict-Related Sexual Violence: The Arms Control and Disarmament Toolbox”.
In multiple annual reports on conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV), the UN Secretary General has recognized that the illicit proliferation of small arms and light weapons is among the factors fueling systematic and widespread CRSV. Yet despite this, not much attention has been given to practical ways arms control and disarmament can contribute to the prevention of CRSV in both the long term and the short term.
UNIDIR’s new research seeks to fill this gap by exploring the linkages between the proliferation of weapons and CRSV and identifying opportunities for integrating arms control and disarmament into the prevention of and response to CRSV. Building on publicly available CRSV incident data and UNIDIR’s work on leveraging arms control for conflict prevention, this new research provides a framework for understanding how different arms control and disarmament treaties, instruments, measures, and tools can be leveraged to complement and strengthen CRSV prevention.
