On 19 August, UNIDIR hosted the first annual Innovations Dialogue on Digital Technology and International Security
The Innovations Dialogue responds to the request of the General Assembly, in resolution 73/32, that UNIDIR agrees to a seminar on the role of science and technology in the context of international security and disarmament. The theme for the UNIDIR 2019 Innovations Dialogue is “Digital Technologies & International Security”. The Dialogue examined technologies that are in daily headlines – artificial intelligence, distributed ledger technology, quantum computing, and the Internet of Things – yet not currently formally addressed in multilateral disarmament agendas and discussions.
The Innovations Dialogue examined the interplay between new digital innovations and existing technologies and their possible radical and novel implications for international security and disarmament. The Dialogue explored how to multi-stakeholder engagement can effective responses to digital innovations and consider the international community can harness innovations to address existing disarmament challenges.
The Innovations Dialogue was generously supported by the Governments of Germany, India, Qatar and Switzerland.
