The UN, Cyberspace and International Peace and Security

05/10/2016 - 05/10/2016, 5 October 2016, New York, USA

Work undertaken in recent years by the United Nations Groups of Governmental Experts on Developments in the Field of Information and Telecommunications in the Context of International Security has significantly altered the political landscape for international cooperation on security issues in cyberspace. A new, expanded GGE started work in August with the mandate to continue to study, with a view to promoting common understandings, existing and potential threats in the sphere of information security and possible cooperative measures to address them.

In order to respond to the growing interest of Member States and other stakeholders in the international peace and security dimensions of cyberspace, this side event will consider: the GGE process itself; how the GGE is unique and distinct from other UN activities on cyber issues; and what is being done to ensure that no State is “left behind” in the cyber security policy discussion.

Support from UNIDIR's core funders provides the foundation for all of the Institute's activities.
In addition, dedicated project funding was received from the German Federal Foreign Office.
