The roundtable for AI, security and ethics: Forging global alignment through multistakeholder dialogue

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies has put AI at the forefront of global policy discussions. Policymakers and regulators worldwide have begun to recognize the urgency of shared understandings, norms and regulations that transcend national borders and individual interests, including in the context of AI’s applications for security and defence.

Against this backdrop, the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), in partnership with Microsoft, has launched the Roundtable for AI, Security and Ethics (RAISE). By convening experts from diverse backgrounds and across geopolitical divides, RAISE intends to foster inclusive and multisectoral engagement by promoting open dialogue and cooperation. This approach can help to address the complex implications of AI for national and global security and promote the responsible development, deployment and use of these technologies – a sine qua non for advancing towards a common and prosperous digital future.

This UNIDIR Security and Technology Programme side event to the First Committee emphasizes the importance of multistakeholder dialogue as a means of supporting the international community in its governance efforts relating to AI in security and defence. During the event, UNIDIR and Microsoft will provide attendees with an overview of RAISE and its on-going work; share views on selected issues relevant to the work of the First Committee community; and explore the critical role of RAISE as both complement and support to ongoing multilateral initiatives that aim to ensure the responsible application of AI in security and defence.
