Artificial intelligence and autonomy

Exploring the impact of advances in artificial intelligence and autonomy on international peace and security.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing many aspects of society. Whether as a decision-support tool or as enabler of the next generation of autonomous systems, including weapons, AI has the potential to radically transform war and peace. Addressing this (r)evolution requires a coherent policy response to ensure that AI is integrated in a responsible manner to mitigate risks and maximize benefits.

Our work supports both negotiations related to autonomous weapons systems, and broader discussions concerning wider applications of AI in the military domain by exploring how the technology is evolving, its potential use on the battlefield and the possible options for effective policy responses. In addition, UNIDIR’s AI Policy Portal supports capacity and confidence-building by enabling transparency and information-sharing.
