Chemical and biological weapons

Growing challenges of diffusion, development and use.

Chemical and biological weapons are prohibited under international law. Yet chemical weapons have been used on numerous occasions in the last decade. And advances and diffusion of biotechnology cause grave concerns over new generations of biological weapons.

UNIDIR explores options to strengthen the chemical and biological weapons prohibition and treaty regimes and to facilitate multi-stakeholder approaches to better manage the challenge of dual-use chemistry and biology in the 21st century.
