The Application and Impact of Artificial Intelligence Beyond Weapons (Publication Launch)

Within the United Nations, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the military domain has been, to-date, primarily discussed in the context of the United Nations Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) on emerging technologies in the area of lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS). However, the application of AI within the military domain extends beyond the issue of LAWS.

In the midst of discussions and debates around the opportunities and risks of AI, governance of AI, responsible use of AI employed for military purposes, the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) has undertaken research aiming to increase understanding on the role of AI in the execution of military tasks beyond applications relating to the use of force and the narrow tasks of target selection and target engagement within the targeting process.

UNIDIR is pleased to invite you to this event seeking to raise awareness on AI capabilities relating to non-lethal military tasks, to discuss existing and future AI capabilities, the impact of their application to military tasks, and to bridge gaps in existing conversations regarding the use of AI for military purposes.

This event also launches UNIDIR’s new report on the topic: “Artificial Intelligence in the Military: The Application and Impact of Artificial Intelligence Beyond Weapons.”
