This event, jointly organized by UNIDIR and the Permanent Representation of Germany to the Conference on Disarmament, will see the launch of the report From Casualties to Care: Implementing Age and Gender-Sensitive Victim Assistance.
The report analyses how victim assistance obligations have been implemented as part of disarmament treaties in a variety of conflict and post-conflict settings, as well as how victim-assistance interventions have been enabled through national laws and policies, funding, international cooperation, and monitoring and reporting.
The report outlines promising practices towards more effective support for victims, including cash and voucher assistance, peer-to-peer support networks and mobile health clinics. It also identifies priority areas that can deliver meaningful change for affected populations, ensuring that victim assistance is sustainable, inclusive and responsive to diverse needs.
The event will feature a presentation of the report, followed by a moderated discussion, where diplomats and disarmament practitioners will discuss challenges and opportunities for enhancing victim assistance in multilateral processes that cover anti-personnel mines, cluster munitions and explosive weapons.
