Theme 2: My story, my strength

1. Learn

Using perspective to tell your story

In photography, perspective is about the angle, distance, or point of view you choose when taking a photo. Changing your position – even slightly – can completely change how your story is seen and felt by others.

A photo taken from down low can make something look strong or powerful. A photo taken from above can show vulnerability or a broader view. Moving closer to your subject can feel personal, while stepping back can show the bigger picture.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I want others to notice or feel in this moment?
  • What angle or distance can help share my truth?
  • How can I use my point of view to show what gave me strength?

You choose what story your photo tells. Your perspective – both emotional and physical – matters.

Prompt: Show us the world from where you stand.

Now, use what you have learned about perspective and point of view to tell your story by changing your angle.

  • Low angle: Photographing from below can make a person or object look powerful, resilient, or larger-than-life. It can reflect strength, determination, or pride.
  • High angle: Photographing from above can create a sense of vulnerability, reflection, or humility. It might also symbolize change, looking at something familiar in a new way.
  • Close-up: Zooming in on a face, hand, or object can show emotion and meaning in the small details. It helps viewers feel more connected.
  • Wide frame: Pulling back gives context. It shows the environment, surroundings, or the scale of what someone’s facing—or overcoming.

Take three photos of the same subject: one close-up, one from above, and one from below. What changes in each one? Which feels most powerful to you?
