Theme 5: A just and secure future for all

1. Learn

Using framing and composition to show a just and secure world.
How you frame a photo can completely change the way others see and feel your story. Composition isn’t about having fancy tools – it’s about making choices with intention.

One helpful technique is the rule of thirds: try placing your subject off-center, closer to one side of the frame. This can create a stronger image than putting the subject right in the middle, helping to draw the viewer’s attention and adding visual interest. You can also look for leading lines – like roads, walls, or shadows – that guide the viewer’s eyes to the most important part of the photo.
Symmetry is another way to create meaning. A balanced scene can feel calm, strong, or full of possibility.

When you slow down and think about how everything fits in the frame – what to include, what to leave out, and where to stand – your photo becomes more than just a picture. It becomes a message.

Ask yourself:

  • What does a fair and secure future look like to me?
  • How can I use framing and composition to help others feel that future?
  • Where should I place my subject to tell the strongest version of my story?

Think about how composition can guide your viewer’s emotions – and bring your vision of justice and peace to life.

2. Create

Prompt: What does a fair and secure future look like in your eyes?

Use what you’ve learned about framing and composition to visually express your vision of justice, safety, and equity. Think about the scene you want to capture — is it a person, a group, a space, or an action that represents progress and possibility?

Think about how your choices, from where you stand, how you frame the moment, what you include or leave out, shape the message you send.

Whether it’s a community garden, a youth group meeting, a moment of solidarity, or a peaceful protest — let your composition tell the world what tomorrow could look like, starting today.

Then, add a short caption or reflection:

Why does this image represent a better future for you?
What message do you want others to take away from it?

Let your composition carry your vision forward.
