Applying a Women, Peace and Security approach to international security helps to understand how social norms shape the role of weapons in societies, as well as the impacts of weapons and violence.
Our research considers how factors such as gender, age, disability affect issues such as: exposure to risk; the likelihood of becoming a victim/survivor of violence; the ability to access medical attention in the aftermath of conflict; the long-lasting biological and physiological impacts of weapons on individuals; among others.
Based on research findings, we offer ideas to inform tailored measures that promote equal access to healthcare, socio-economic inclusion, and reintegration after a conflict, as well as opportunities for meaningful engagement in international security.
