Best Practices for Gender Equality in Conventional Arms Control: Report Launch & APMBC Briefing

The Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) and the Permanent Mission of Germany organized an interactive discussion marking the launch of a new report on “Best Practices for Gender Equality in Conventional Arms Control: Survey Results”.

Gender has become an established topic for consideration across all areas of arms control and disarmament, including mine action. But what does that mean in practice? To understand how discussions on gender equality in arms control are informing action on the ground, UNIDIR surveyed 40 organizations dealing with various aspects of arms control and disarmament around the world including national authorities, international and regional/subregional organizations, civil society and think tanks.

The event included a presentation of the survey results, which showed a good level of interest and awareness on gender equality matters among organizations active in this field. Panelists discussed distinct practices that are being implemented to improve gender balance and to transform the working environment to make it more inclusive. They also reflected on challenges and what is needed to achieve gender quality in conventional arms control, in particular, in the context of the  Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC).
