Best Practices for Gender Equality in Conventional Arms Control: Lessons from Mine Actions, SALW control, Weapons and Ammunition Management (Regional Briefings)

UNIDIR organized a series of regional briefings to share ongoing research about best practices for promoting women’s participation and gender equality in conventional arms control and disarmament.

This was an opportunity for UNIDIR experts to present preliminary findings from an online survey carried out with national authorities, international organizations and civil society groups that work with mine action, SALW control, and weapons and ammunition management.

The presentation was followed by an interactive discussion about the implications of these findings for ongoing multilateral processes. Special consideration was given to upcoming meetings of the disarmament calendar, such as the APMBC MSP, the Annual Meeting of the CCW and the next session of the OEWG on ammunition.

KEY DISCUSSION POINTS

  • Why gender considerations matter in conventional arms control;

  • Overview of preliminary research findings from UNIDIR survey on best practices;

  • Insights from Gender Focal Points and exchange of national experiences;

  • Challenges and opportunities to advance gender mainstreaming.
