Space industry workshop: Industry perspectives on addressing space security challenges

The global space economy, valued at $596 billion in 2024, is poised for exponential growth, projected to reach $1.8 trillion by 2035. As outer space becomes increasingly saturated with advanced technologies, commercial pursuits and diverse actors, new and complex security challenges are emerging. Examples of this include space collisions, debris accumulation and the evolving threats posed by counter-space capabilities. In this competitive and dynamic environment, the importance of effective space security governance is more critical than ever and the role of industry actors, those at the forefront of space operations, is vital. The technical expertise and operational experience of industry actors can provide insight into space activities that can actively contribute to advancing multilateral debates on space security and effectively foster peace, security and sustainability in outer space.

UNIDIR’s space industry workshop will bring together industry actors to openly share their perspectives, concerns and recommendations on space security. The workshop is designed to facilitate a better understanding of the perspectives of commercial actors, thereby aiding collaborative governance around space security issues. It aims to raise awareness of multilateral space security processes and provide industry representatives with the information needed to engage meaningfully in open UN processes on space security. This includes, but is not limited to, participation in the new Open-ended Working Group established by decision 79/512 on the prevention of an arms race in outer space, which will operate from 2025 to 2028.
