The last quarter of 2024 has provided a strong boost to multilateral negotiations on artificial intelligence (AI), both in the realm of civilian use and in the context of military applications, international peace and security. Following the adoption of the Pact for the Future and its annexes, the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly’s First Committee also adopted the first historical resolution on AI in the military domain, initiating a potential path for dialogue at the multilateral level focused on this disruptive technology.
In this context, UNIDIR invited representatives from all regional groups to participate in an AI and International Peace and Security briefing series. The briefings provided an overview of recent developments in relation to international discussions on AI in the military domain and its implications on international peace and security. The event unpacked the outcomes of the Second Summit on Responsible AI in the Military Domain held in Seoul, and provided a detailed review of the resolution adopted by the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly’s First Committee on Artificial Intelligence in the Military Domain and its Implications for International Peace and Security. The purpose of the event was to provide Member States with a clear understanding of both the current state of affairs of the main themes, challenges and opportunities, as well as of the content of the resolution, with a view to encourage and support broad participation in the submission of State views which will be captured by a report of the Secretary General.
