UNIDIR hosted a series of regional briefings to share research findings on the linkages between armed conflict and sexual violence, and how arms control measures can play a role in mitigating conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV). The briefings featured presentations by UNIDIR, as well as interactive discussions on the research’s implications for national, regional and multilateral initiatives to address CRSV.
The dialogue examined the use of sexual violence in the context of armed conflict and gender-based violence that persists even after individuals exit these groups. It explored how sexual violence, coupled with impunity, can drive victims to join armed groups. The briefings further analyzed linkages between increased militarization, the proliferation of weapons and CRSV. Finally, participants considered recommendations for integrating arms control measures into prevention efforts, both specific to CRSV and broader conflict prevention strategies.
