Differentiated impacts of nuclear weapons: From research to policy and practice

UNIDIR and the Permanent Missions of Ireland and Mexico are pleased to invite you to an interactive, side event focused on mainstreaming gender research into policy and practise, both in the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and across the Disarmament and Non-Proliferation architecture. This event will be an opportunity to hear from scientific experts on recent and emerging research on the gendered impacts of nuclear weapons directly relevant to the TPNW and wider nuclear disarmament, as well as diplomats and civil society representatives on the implementation of the gender provisions of the Treaty.

The panel will feature a presentation of a recent UNIDIR report on Gender and Ionizing Radiation, which analyses health impacts of nuclear weapons taking into account gender, sex and age as critical factors determining radiation outcomes. It seeks to form a basis for collating existing material and pointing for areas of future research.

Key themes for discussion include:

  • Gendered impacts of nuclear weapons, including recent and emerging research, and relevance for TPNW implementation and universalisation;
  • Progress and challenges in integrating gender perspectives into international cooperation and assistance;
  • New opportunities for collaboration on gender issues across nuclear regimes to advance inclusive nuclear disarmament.
