A Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Europe: Utopian Pipedream or Realistic Policy Option?

04/09/2015 - 04/09/2015, 4 September 2015, Geneva, Switzerland

Many see a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Europe as an impossibility or simply a contradiction in terms. But some strategic analysts have concluded that such a proposal offers real opportunities, and that these require thoughtful and careful assessment. At a time of rising tensions and a sense of impasse in the nuclear disarmament regime, enhanced efforts coupled with new momentum—perhaps offered by out-of-the box thinking— are needed. This event provided an opportunity to learn about a recently concluded study from the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF) and to engage in a thought-provoking discussion.
