Constructive dialogue around the topic of ‘nuclear risk reduction’ featured prominently in the latest review cycle of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). It gained even more prominence following the invasion of Ukraine. This event sought to contribute to informed discussion on the topic.
The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), alongside the British American Security Information Council (BASIC) and the Governments of the Netherlands and Switzerland hosted this in-person event on Taking Forward Nuclear Risk Reduction on the margins of the NPT Review Conference.
A recording of the event is now available via UN WebTV.
Speakers explored:
-
the evolution of the nuclear risk reduction agenda and possible outcomes on the topic at the NPT Review Conference;
-
practical measures that could be implemented in the short term (including in the area of crisis prevention and management);
-
priorities for the international community in advancing a multilateral agenda on risk reduction.
