UNIDIR is organizing a dialogue workshop among military forces in East Africa to discuss and share experiences and understanding of military policy and practices to reduce civilian harm from the effects of explosive weapons in urbanised environments. The workshop will aim at identifying policy, practice and procedure options to enhance the effectiveness of civilian harm mitigation with a focus on multilateral operations in East Africa. Special attention will be given to gaining more comprehensive understanding of the use of explosive weapons by non-state actors in populated areas and options for State actors to prevent and mitigate their impact.
WHEN & WHERE: Tuesday 10 March and Wednesday 11 March 2020, at the International Peacekeeping Training Center (IPSTC) in Nairobi, Kenya.
PARTICIPANTS: UNIDIR encourages the participation of senior-level military planners from peace operations and troop contributing countries, current and former commanders and deputy force commanders, targeteers, weaponeers, mission intelligence officers, and protection of civilians’ experts.
