Adrian Ionescu

Adrian M. Ionescu is a Fellow at UNIDIR’s Security and Technology Programme. He is a Full Professor and Dean of Engineering at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland, where he directs the Nanoelectronic Devices Laboratory. His research pioneered steep-slope semiconductor devices, advanced biosensors and microelectromechanical systems devices for energy-efficient Edge AI systems. He currently leads work on neuromorphic technologies for embodied AI and scalable silicon qubits for future quantum computers within the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research SPIN.

Adrian has authored over 600 publications and is a recipient of the 2024 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Cledo Brunetti Technical Field Award, the IEEE Electron Devices Society George Smith Award (2017), the International Business Machines Faculty Award (2013), and the André Blondel Medal (2009). He is an IEEE Fellow, member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences, and was elected to Academia Europaea in 2025. Adrian serves as a European Research Council Ambassador to Switzerland and has held editorial leadership roles, including Board Member of Proceedings of the IEEE and Editor of IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices. Serving as both founder and Chief Technology Officer of Xsensio SA, a Swiss firm at the nexus of nanotechnology and healthcare, he continues to advance translational solutions for digital twins in healthcare applications.
