UNIDIR, in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs, is organizing a series of nuclear-related events in the lead-up to the 2026 Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) Review Conference. The conference is central to evaluating the implementation of the treaty and shaping its future direction. These events aim to enhance understanding of key issues and deepen engagement with the NPT review processes, procedures and potential outcomes. The series is sponsored by Switzerland.
The fifth event in the series will focus on the implementation of Article IV, which recognizes the inalienable right of states to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and promotes international cooperation in this area. Nuclear science and technology play an important role not only in energy production but also in a wide range of non-energy applications, including medicine, agriculture, water management and other areas that contribute to sustainable development. The discussion will bring together officials and experts to assess the current situation and explore practical options for advancing the peaceful uses of nuclear energy at the upcoming conference and beyond.
