“Science & Technology Watchtower” Project launch

Science and technology (S & T) developments are key enablers of social and economic development. However, as stated by the UN Secretary General in the 2024 report on current developments in science and technology and their impact on international peace and disarmament efforts, there are ongoing concerns that “developments in science and technology of relevance to security and disarmament are outpacing the capacity of normative and governance frameworks to manage the risks.” To keep abreast of innovation, the systematic identification of relevant S & T developments, as well as the timely analysis of their potential positive, and negative impact on disarmament and international security is of utmost importance.

In this context, UNIDIR, with the support of the European Union, has launched a three-year-project titled “Science and Technology Watchtower: Monitoring innovation for disarmament” aimed at the identification of S & T developments and analysis of risks and opportunities for disarmament and international security.

UNIDIR is organizing this side event to the 80th session of the UN General Assembly First Committee to launch the project. Following a project briefing, the event will discuss some of the most pressing implications of S & T in relation to conventional arms and ammunition and nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. Finally, it will identify opportunities and challenges linked to S & T monitoring in the various disarmament domains.
