The 2005 conference "Safeguarding Space Security: Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space" is the latest in a series of annual conferences on space security held by UNIDIR.
This conference challenged participants to foster international cooperation to make use, in a peaceful way, of the opportunities offered by space to mankind.
Participants examined how to ensure space security through a variety of political means as well as national or multilateral legal and legislative instruments, and discussed the possible mechanisms needed to verify the implementation of these instruments.
The conference concluded with an exploration of the next steps for the international community to safeguard the peaceful uses of outer space.
