This event addressed the significance of gender issues in the development and deployment of military artificial intelligence (AI) systems, providing an opportunity to present findings from UNIDIR research about gender bias in data collection, algorithms, and computer processing and their implications for AI military systems.
Panellists reflected on the challenges associated with AI systems’ development and deployment in specific contexts. Drawing on various human rights and gender equality frameworks, as well as the ongoing multilateral process on LAWS, panellists considered possible avenues for countering AI bias and mitigating harm. In doing so, the discussion sought to chart a path for technology development that promotes — rather than hinders — gender equity and contributes to gender mainstreaming in the military.
