The Monrovia Workshop to Support the Universalization and Effective Implementation of the Arms Trade Treaty in Africa

With 2024 marking the tenth anniversary of the entry into force of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), it is an appropriate moment to take stock of and share information on how African States have overcome challenges to become States Parties to the ATT, implement the Treaty’s provisions, and fulfil its obligations.

It is in view of this anniversary that the Liberian National Commission on Arms, in partnership with UNIDIR, with the support of the ATT Voluntary Trust Fund, are holding a four-day workshop to share experience and lessons learned on becoming an ATT State Party and achieving effective ATT implementation.

The event is the first Pan-African exchange to enhance efforts towards:

  1. Increasing the number of African ATT States Parties
  2. Supporting effective implementation to achieve the objective and purpose of the treaty
  3. Enabling African States Parties to fulfil their ATT obligations, with an emphasis on reporting and financial obligations

The Monrovia Workshop will involve national government-selected experts from 20 African states, bringing together those that are States Parties, signatories, and States that are not yet party to the treaty.

The workshop will enable the production of a “lessons learned document” that will provide examples of effective measures that have been tried and tested and can be used by other African states to overcome challenges for becoming an ATT State Party or implementing treaty provisions and fulfilling ATT obligations.
