Building the Bridge: SDG 16

On June 26, UNIDIR hosted a roundtable discussion on arms control and conflict prevention ahead of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

This event focused on good practices and lessons-learned for integrating conventional arms control into preventative thinking and actions in achieving sustainable development. The event facilitated an initial exchange on integration methods with proven success from Africa and Latin America in achieving select SDGs targets: 1) reducing armed violence (Target 16.1); 2) strengthening national institutions (Target 16.A); and 3) advancing gender equality and empowerment as part of the peace and security agenda (Targets 5.2, 5.5, and 5.C). This event was organized on the margins of the 72nd Session of the Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters and in cooperation with the Government of Switzerland, the Permanent Mission of Peru to the United Nations in New York, and the Igarapé Institute.
