As outer space becomes increasingly critical for both civilian and military domains, it also becomes more contested. Any military conflict in the Earth’s orbit – whether it originated there or was a spillover from the fighting below – would have an extremely high potential of escalation all the way to the nuclear level. There is a need to examine the space environment through the nuclear risk reduction lens.
To explore these issues further, the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) is pleased to invite you to the virtual side event “Addressing Nuclear Risks of Outer-Space Activities” on the sidelines of the 77th UNGA First Committee. This event provides a unique forum for diplomatic and expert communities to discuss the particularities of the space domain and consider policy options to reduce possible risks.
