The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) hosted a webinar on Towards Ethically Driven Robotics and Automation Systems.
Global industry standards and guidelines are being developed by the technical community to ensure that autonomous and intelligent systems are ethically designed, developed, and used in order to address issues of trust, safety, and security. One such standard is the IEEE Ontological Standard for Ethically Driven Robotics and Automation Systems that establishes taxonomies of properties and concepts for the design and development of automation systems in accordance with ethical principles. These frameworks could inform the discussions of the GGE on LAWS on issues including human-machine interaction, responsibility, and accountability.
Ahead of the second intersessional session of the GGE on LAWS that will focus on human control/judgement and human-machine interaction, ethical considerations, and responsibility and accountability, UNIDIR is inviting Dr Edson Prestes, who led the development of the IEEE Ontological Standard, to discuss how such standards can contribute to the discussions of the Group and help advance the debate on emerging technologies in the area of LAWS.
