Shimona Mohan
Shimona is a Researcher at UNIDIR’s Integrated Approaches Programme and UNIDIR’s Security and Technology Programmes. Her areas of focus include the intersections of security, emerging technologies (in particular AI and cybersecurity), and gender. She was named one of the 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics for 2024.
She has published book chapters, policy briefs, papers, op-eds and factsheets across her areas of focus and presented her research at several platforms, including the United Nations General Assembly, the Group of Governmental Experts on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems under the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, the Summit on Responsible Artificial Intelligence in the Military Domain, the Internet Governance Forum, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and various branches of the Government of India. She has also spoken about her work on UN News and New Delhi Television, in podcasts and interviews, and at civil society, academic and Track 1.5 conferences.
Shimona has spearheaded capacity-building programmes on AI and cybersecurity for government representatives from over 75 countries as well as the multi-stakeholder community working around emerging technology.
She holds a Master’s degree in International Affairs from the Geneva Graduate Institute and has previously worked at the Observer Research Foundation, the Think20 Secretariat under India’s G20 presidency, and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Shimona speaks English and Hindi fluently, and Korean and French at intermediate levels.
