The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) is a unique example of a nuclear-weapons agreement informed by gender considerations from its negotiation, adoption and implementation. Since its entry into force, States Parties, Signatories and other stakeholders have been exploring options for shifting words to action, and effectively implementing the Treaty’s provisions in a gender-responsive manner. For example, as part of the Vienna Action Plan, adopted in 2022, States Parties established a Gender Focal Point to support the implementation of the gender provisions of the Treaty. They also created a geographically diverse and gender balanced network of experts to support the goals and TPNW. Additionally, States Parties decided to begin working on guidelines for ensuring age- and gender-sensitive Victim Assistance, as well as guidelines for the integration of gender perspectives in international cooperation and assistance.
Co-hosted by UNIDIR and the Permanent Missions of Chile and Ireland, this event will bring together a diverse group of experts and practitioners to take stock of progress towards those actions, as well as to share research findings and discuss initiatives that can enhance gender mainstreaming throughout the implementation of the TPNW.
The event aims to explore:
- Progress and challenges in integrating gender perspectives into international cooperation and assistance;
- Mechanisms for providing gender-sensitive victim assistance and achieving justice for survivors and impacted communities;
- New opportunities for collaboration on gender, victim assistance, international cooperation and assistance.
