Gaukhar Mukhatzhanova is a Fellow with UNIDIR’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Programme, and the Director of the International Organizations and Nonproliferation Program at the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP). Her work is focused on multilateral regimes, institutions, and negotiations in nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. She also leads the VCDNP’s training courses for diplomats and practitioners.

Gaukhar served as an NGO advisor on state delegations to the 2010, 2015 and 2022 Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conferences and several Preparatory Committee sessions. She also advised the delegation of Chile to the negotiations of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in 2017. She is a principal author of a series of reports monitoring implementation of the 2010 NPT Action Plan. She is a co-author of Nuclear Politics and the Non-Aligned Movement: Principles versus Pragmatism (Routledge, 2012) and co-editor of Forecasting Nuclear Proliferation in the 21st Century (Stanford University Press, 2010, in two volumes). Gaukhar has also published in International Security, Arms Control Today, and the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.
